Good variety of elemental powers.

Control of the camera is too limited.

Spyro has been around for over a decade and in that time the very recognizable purple dragon has starred in a number of different games on the PlayStation network of consoles. Dawn of the Dragon continues the Spyro series and features more of the same gameplay that has been found in the fantasy series before.

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon is an action arcade game which has the main character Spyro completing a variety of fairly closed levels to eventually defeat his enemy, Dark Master Malefor. The game features a fairly simple gameplay style and animation style. Most of the game is presented in somewhat of a cartoonish way and the idea is to get through each one of the levels by dodging and evading attacks as well as flying through obstacles as Spyro.

The combat in this new game allows players to coordinate attacks against their enemies and also is aid and defend against attacks quite easily. Spyro has different short attacks as well as the ability to grab smaller enemies and throw them into other enemies. The quick roll option help Spyro to avoid trouble and the thrash ability helps to dispatch enemies that you pick up as well. Bosses take a little more coordinating and it may take several tries in order to beat some of the more difficult bosses in the game. Although this game is marketed somewhat towards kids, it may be difficult for some kids to coordinate some of the more difficult boss battles.

The voices and some of the cinematic’s that are in this new Spyro game are great and work to finish up the story quite well. Spyro is voiced again by Elijah Wood, and there are plenty of tips of the hat to the Lord of the rings films especially in the visual style of many of the levels.

The gameplay campaign is quite short for some players and may take you only around 10 hours to finish. It is quite a good story but for many players who have played their way through the entire series, 10 hours doesn’t seem like a very challenging game. Playing through the game and hearing the great voice acting from stars like Elijah Wood, Christina Ricci and Mark Hamill also make the game well worth playing for any new players to the series.

The game is available on the 360 as well as PlayStation three and the Wii. Throughout the course of the levels you can see some great visuals on both the 360 and the PlayStation versions of this game but graphics have been toned down quite a bit for the Nintendo version. This is a fun game and if you are a fan of the action game genre this can provide you with a great new series to play through.
