Here, it’s your job to build yourself up as the best monster trainer in the land, all while trying to find your father and discover why, exactly, your world is currently overrun with dragons.

With over 200 monsters to catch and train, or beat, you also have to earn soul gems, available in earth, wind, fire, and water, all of which can help to enhance your fights and your abilities as a trainer. The battle system allows you to have up to six of your students fighting, although you can’t change around the roster mid-battle. The monsters handle the fighting once in, although you do get to pick the attack.

At its core, Dragon Island Blue is laid back. You can go about your business, try again when you fail, and if you tire a bit with all the monster catching, training, and fighting, you can also go on quests. These require that you defeat certain individuals in different cities, catch certain monsters, or other objectives.

All in all, there’s plenty to do here, the graphics are reminiscent of Pokémon and Digimon, and it’s all around a good time!
